Why dryer maintenance is important

It is recommended that you clean out your dryer's lint trap after every load of laundry. This is important because if you don't clean it out, it prevents the dryer from being able to exhaust hot air from the dryer, causing the dryer to overheat. Cleaning your lint trap can improve drying time, reduce your energy bill, and help prevent dryer fires. The lint trap collects fibers and clothes particles as they tumble dry, preventing them from clogging the airflow of your dryer’s vent system.

Dryer vent cleaning increases the lifespan of your dryer. When there is lint or other obstructions stuck within your vent, it generates wear and tear on your appliance. This will cause parts to fail and prematurely shortens the duration of your dryer. Dryer vents should also be cleaned at least twice a year.

Your dryer’s exhaust system can get clogged with lint, which will keep your dryer from functioning properly. As a result, the dryer will not only take longer to dry clothes, it will also increase your electric bill and create a fire risk. It’s a lose-lose-lose proposition. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, there are about 2,900 dryer fires a year, which cause an estimated five deaths, 100 injuries and $35 million in property loss. The leading cause of those fires? Failure to clean dryer vents.

It is also a good idea to hard pipe your dryer if it is not already. Dryer ducts made of plastic or foil can cause buildup issues and are the most common cause of dryer fires. Plastic or foil style dryer ductwork can sag and allow lint to collect in the ridges or low places. However, with its smooth, straight walls, a hard pipe (rigid metal pipe) provides maximum airflow and minimal lint traps. Clean, unobstructed, frictionless ducts encourage air flow efficiency, quickens drying times, adds longevity to clothing's life and reduces utility bills.
